Lately I have been thinking a lot about health, fitness, and even more so, basic movement. There are a few unfortunate things happening around me and it is a constant reminder to express appreciation for the ability to move, breathe and exercise the way I can. All too often, we take our health for granted until there is a scare or a reason for us to remember that our bodies need movement and for us to treat them well.
It’s so easy to treat exercise as something that we have to do, when in reality, it is something we are so lucky to have the ability to do. I wanted to share this post because no one is perfect at it. We all sometimes turn exercise into punishment for eating foods that we shouldn’t, or drinking a few too many glasses of wine (guilty!), or to look “skinny.” The more I have been thinking about how lucky we are to have the ability to move, the more I enjoy fueling my body with the exercise and movement it craves. Find your thing, and embrace it. Whether it’s a Zumba class, Pilates, or swimming, find what you enjoy and celebrate your body for the accomplishment of being able to move.
One of the places I have spent a lot of time over the last year is the Madison Improvement Club. It is such a special place with an infectious, inspirational energy and the constant reminder to express gratitude for our ability to exercise. In previous posts I’ve talked about my love for running and another great studio called Jabz Boxing. Again, whatever you enjoy, find that and embrace it. Don’t over complicate it. Just enjoy the fact that you can move your body the way you can. Remind yourself, when that little voice pops up in your head and says you can’t, that you can. And when that doesn’t work, because sometimes we need a little more encouragement, remember, there are so many people out there that wish they could be moving the way you are. That would love to run and feel the wind in their face. That would love to be stuck on that stupid stationary bike in spin class or dancing in a Zumba class.
